Her interests in People & Animals, patternmaking and black & white combine to make a bold and varied exhibition which we can't wait to set loose! Our first open submissions exhibition is also our Festival Exhibition this year and we are celebrating both by connecting the dots between the city and the work it inspires. If you have a piece of art work you can link to a specific location in Edinburgh then we'd love to hear from you! Please send an email with up to 3 jpgs to art.broughtondeli@gmail.com and include the location you associate with the work, a web link and a bit about you. The deadline is July 02. We have restricted space so a selection process will be carried out on the evening of July 03.

The image above is of Tommy Perman's print 'East Claremont Street / Melgund Terrace' and photographer Andrew JL Ansell has captured this print in it's location. We are looking for a range of interpretations, from the literal to highly conceptual as well as a range of locations - so let you imagination run riot. The points highlighted by the artists works will be printed up on a map creating an alternative tour of Edinburgh's inspiring sites.

The works selected from the submissions will be arranged in an exhibition in The Broughton Deli from July 17 - August 28 with a fantastic fiesta of an opening night on Thursday July 28, just in time to warm up for the festival.

Louise Smurethwaite's work is all about walking and she walks to make work... we hope you can stroll over to The Broughton Deli this coming Thursday April 14, 7.30 pm to enjoy her bright colours, strong lines and bold shapes. Louise will be showing some of her photography, drawings, silk screen prints and etchings in her first solo exhibition since graduating from Edinburgh College of art 2 years ago.

#4 merry menagerie - some snaps

Merry Menagerie was a really sucessfull exhibition, and our card range has prooven to be a hit too, so we are pleased as punch! Unfortunately we only have some snaps of this exhibition as the works just started vanishing off the walls from the beginning of the exhibition run as people clamoured to grab their perfect Christmas gift. Over the coming weeks I intend to source further images so this blog can remain as a document of the exhibition's sucess.

#4 merry menagerie

Our christmas exhibition of animal based works is a riot through the animal kingdom as see through the eyes of artists and designers at varying stages of their career from the established and successful painter's hand of Ruth Addinall to the future bright lights of Edinburgh College of art, student textile designer William Watson-West.

Exhibiting with us for the first time is recent graduate Lindsay Brown whose distinctive endangered animal repeat pattern is the flier image of Merry Menagerie. Along with the established talents of Eleni Kalorkoti, Libby Walker, Nekocherry and Kevin Sim.

Returning to Broughton Deli Art, are some of our favourite creative kids on the block - Susiemaroon, The Lindstrom Effect, Ticky and Ciara Mc Dermott. The exhibition runs from November 14 to January 14, and we are having an arty christmas party on Sunday December 12, from 6-8 pm... the more of you that make it along to try some delicious deli snacks and sip some Villeneuve wine, the merrier this menagerie will be.

We are proud to announce the launch our first, exclusive set of greetings cards which depict a menagerie of animals by exhibiting artists - some christmassy, some... less so! They are a bargain at £2.50 a card or 5 for £10 and they are printed on FSC approved paper to keep your conscience happy.

# 2 captain redwood's exploits are turning heads!

We were pleased as punch to hear that Captain Redwood has caught the informed eye of Patrick Burgoyne and The Creative Review team, with the above post on their blog. The Captain started his exploration of the art world right here in Broughton Deli Art as part of the much-loved exhibition Silver Halide, by Ian Bruce and Vala Jonsdotter of The Lindstrom Effect. Along side a variety of their works, the Voodoo Owls were also mentioned, which have flown our nest to take up a perch at Edinburgh's favourite book shop - Analogue. Have a peep and feel the joy!

Exhibition #3 was chosen by the owners of The Broughton Deli, Ailith Anderson and Euan Fryer. Karen Nelson is a passionate painter based in the Scottish Boarders who takes influence from her surrounding landscapes.

Karen is a family oriented painter who collects photographs on long walks with her family and pet dogs. These photographs and fond memories form the foundation of the exhibited body of works. From her vibrant oil paintings to her autumnal pastel drawings, Karen's interest in light and texture is explored in her works - as is her love of contemporary landscape painters such as David Hockney. This is Karen's first solo exhibition in Edinburgh and we hope you enjoy a wonder through the forests and contrasting colours of the seasons.

# 2 the lindstrom effect's silver halide

The Lindstrom Effect are an Edinburgh based Design House who specialise in Illustration and photography. Ian Bruce and Vala Jonsdotter are the multi-tallented twosome behind the company, and Broughton Deli Art feel very priveledged to have their works on show during Edinburgh's bustling Festival.

We have some new resadents in broughton deli, the hand sized Voodoo Owls are just £10 each and are hot off the the lindstrom effect's gocco print press! Ian & Vala hand made these charming wooden scupltures and have placed them in our pigeon-hole style shelving - a proper perch.

Ready to welcome you on your arrival to the deli are Ian Bruce's two latest creation, from his new moustached gents series. Captain Redwood and Dr Watson are always well turned out and sure to have their best foot forward at all times. Since hanging this exhibition, Ian has developed this series to include another 3 chaps... or chapp-esses?

Nestling in the hall, we have Coco, Voo Doo Owl and Erla. The portrait of Coco Chanel, an icon of tailoring, fashion and celebrity whose film biopic was releaced recently under the name Coco. Drawing inspiration from the film, rather than the infamous Channel brand, this portrait depicts a young, anonymous designer who is identifyable by her peterpan collar and wide eyes. The remarkable similarity between Coco herself and the actress Audrey Tatou leaves us uncertain who The Lindstrom Effect are more interested in depicting, but that may be the point. Originally a hand drawing by Ian Bruce in his trusty black fine-liner the work is scaned, computer rendered and printed as archival quality, giclee prints on hannamule paper. It is this attention to detail and investigation into process which helps achieve their professional, covetabel finishes.

The feather is a recuring theme in this exhibition and is the perfect example of The Lindstrom Effect's ability to produce work using the traditional photo-chemical techniques which have taken on cult skills in recent years. The main wall in the back room of the Deli is banked with Ageryotypes by Vala Jonsdotter. While recently taken, these prints have a historical feel - as if they have been rescued from the diary of an 18th centurary explorer striving to understand the new world around them.

The feather marks the entrance way to the exhibition, this time as a digitally produced image, cropping an unrecognisable pattern which is reminiscent of a landscape - a digital exploration of pastures new.

The Lindstrom Effect title these pieces "Light Rotations" - a description of the process involved to capture them. A torch is suspended on a string directly above an camera, in a darkened room. The torch is swung and the pattern produced by the torch-pendulim is captured by the camera. The precision, delicacy and intricate nature of thse prints is enhanced by understanding their production - a very literal relationship between fine art and photography - hand worked drawings with light which produce patterns with mechanical looking precision.

The relationship between the hand made and the mechanically produced pattern is addressed again here in Vala's hand croched window installation. Reminiscent of a globe or head, these two intricately worked spheres hang along side three garlands of circles which occupy the space between the exhibition and the outside world.

The last space we come to is the back room and just when we feel like everything is starting to make sense, The Lindstrom Effect through us a curve ball! Three ink blott paintings hang on the wall, with a fourth resting in their cabinet of curiosities. The titles of these pieces are taken from their favourite freudian films 'All About My Mother', 'Dr Strangelove', 'Spellbound' and 'Frenzy' (in the cabinet), and The Lindstrom Effect realy do dare you to say what you see!

The Cabinet depicts a range of pieces and products made by The Lindstrom Effect, including cards, postcards, thermatropes and of course, the Voodoo Owl. Through glass you can catch a glance of the Skull - the traditional artistic device to symbolise death, which is usually a reminder to the living to... well live.... and look our for signs of The Lindstrom Effect.

Time is a running out to sign up for our 3 night knitting event and there are still some spots to fill! Vala and Jo of K1 yarns will be setting up home to teach you how to knit your very own bunting! From beginner to master, there will be good times for all with our supply of deli sandwiches and coffee to keep you knitting through the evening. Classes run from 6.30 - 8.00pm on Monday 2nd, Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th August for a bargain price of £37.50 for all three evenings and treats.

Exhibition #1 - A Wee Tour!

Cabinets of Curiosities were placed in and around The Deli, chock a block with examples of arts and crafts made in Scotland and centered aroung the theme of tools of the artists and the kitchen. The cabinets were chosen to fit in with the Deli's style. The contents are a mixture of Art works, designed pieces and functional objects donated by friends, family and from The Deli itself.

Laura Masson's brightly coloured ceramics are a tiny treasure in your hand! Laura graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2009 and received the Scottish Arts Council Start Up grant in 2010. Laura has a studio shop in Glasgow and exhibits widely.

These beautiful crowns are hand screen printed, cotton napkins by Julia Douglas. When unfolded the surface pattern outlines instructions on how to re-fold your crown! The pattern is the famous willow pattern and the napkins are available for £12.

Also on display, Julia Douglas' plaster kit titled Bone Aid. The plasters were hand screen printed with the willow pattern as part of Julia's residency at Hospitalfield House. Some of the beautiful objects and furniture in Hospitalfields were slightly damaged and Julia repaired some of them with medical equipment like plasters and bandages with all the care and attention you would show an injured human. These plasters were printed to care for chipped or damaged china. They were displayed in a First Aid Cabinet as though intended for the Deli Staff to use.

These silhouettes of Six Wives of Henry VIII are also chopping boards and were a collaboration between Ticky and Wasted Wood. All the wood was sourced from off cuts which would otherwise have gone to landfill and the surfaces were hand embellished by Ticky.

Ciara McDermott's beautiful, hand made aprons were designed to be worn by staff on the opening night as a fashion performance piece. Some of the aprons were made from ex-staff close and others feature embellishments which reflect Ciara's experiences of working in a Deli. Ciara is a Student at Edinburgh College of Art.

Wasted Wood provided the coat hooks which showcased Ciara McDermott's aprons when they were not being worn. Wasted Wood is the brain child of Sharon Kirby, who is a self-employed cabinet maker and crafter living and working from Studio 203 in Edinburgh's busy Pleasance. All of her wooden craft wares are hand made and finished to the highest standards.

Julia Douglas' hand screen printed paper plates Series made their home in this cabinet in the back room. Housed in the cabinet these delicate plates looked real as the completed Willow pattern is on an object which looks like china - what a trick! Julia Douglas is a freelance Artist, Designer and Maker who lives and works in East Lothian.

The built-in Deli Cabinets in the Main Room and the above the Deli counter were home to Doublethink Design's bright and beautifully printed cushions. Available in a range of colours, the cushions feature drawings of Tea pots and Coffee Pots, titled I Love Tea and I Love Coffee. Each print is limited to an edition of 100 and is taken from an original watercolour painting by Victoria Evans, who lives and works in Glasgow.

Susiemaroon's ethical placements were framed up in our wee back room with a frame rescued from a house fire to make them stand out. Susiemaroon is an ethical eco-labed based in Edinburgh.

Our wee-room-in-the-back is currently home to some perfectly formed place mats by the eco-angel that is susiemaroon. Susie's designs are not only functional, unique and ethically produced, but have a beauty which makes you want to look and them all day long. We thought we'd pop a few on the wall for y'all to enjoy, and if you like them enough to eat your dinner off, you can for a mere £24.

Well, well, well... our launch night went... three times better than it could have thanks to the support of this trio of do-well-ers! The gracious and great Will at Villeneuve Wines just at the top of Broughton Street not only keeps us chipper day to day when he pops in, but helped us choose the wine you all wet your whistle's with on Thursday night. The lovely Fiona at Concrete Wardrobe has been supporting the works of Julia Douglas on Broughton Street for many a year now, and has been equally supportive of our venture - some of you may have picked up our flyer in their well-worth-a-visit shop! And last but not least, the tremendous Sarah at The Red Door Gallery on Victoria Street, who is stocked up on works by Susiemaroon, Xiao and many more talented creative types. Ah.... feel the love...

#1 self catering

Our very first exhibition is all set to launch, so please come and join us on Thursday March 25th between 7 and 9 pm to feast your eyes on and fill your belly with hand crafted delights. The exhbition titled Self Catering takes a look at the tools of the artist and of the kitchen as represented in the broader artistic community across Scotland. Works from established Artists and Makers such as Julia Douglas, a collaborative piece by cabinet maker Sharan Kirby and pieces from ECA students, will feature along side many others in our home-from-home back room. While up front, Ailith Anderson will be offering a chance to sample some of the products of her Kitchen as a celebration of the exhibition launch.

Laura Masson popped in with a bag of her tiny treasures from Glasgow for us to have a look through and select the right objects for our up coming exhibition. It was tricky narrowing the selection... but we got there... in the end... just one more look...

As we are gearing up for our very first exhibition, the aficionados at The RSA just a short hop away, are show casing their annual ESSA exhibition including an exhibit curated by Visual Arts Scotland. The mutli-talented Julia Douglas has helped select and install the works for the VAS exhibition... which is definitely worth a peep. One of the many reasons why we are oh-so pleased to announce that Julia will be lending us some of her works for our first exhibition too... what a treat!
